What You Focus On Expands

I once had a boyfriend with a red truck. After we broke up all I saw were red trucks - everywhere. Can you relate? I didn’t choose to focus on red trucks, but some how I began to. This is an important point to keep in mind as we begin to understand what God says about focus and expansion.

If we are not careful our minds will rule for us. Perhaps this is why God tells us to stay close to the vine (John 15:4), be transformed (Rom 12:2) and the stories of sowing and reaping (Luke 8).

Before we decide what to focus on, we have to start with the end result. So often I have to ask myself, “What is the goal?” What do I want? Peace, joy, favor…the good stuff. The land of milk and honey stuff.

I used to feel guilty for wanting these things, until I read that it is God who puts desires in our hearts (Phil 2:13). In fact, His promise to His people, the Israelites, was a land flowing with milk and honey (Num 14:8). Not to mention there are numerous times in the Bible that God tells us what He has for us… “my peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

But what if all I see or experience is pain, disappointment, failure and hope destroyed? The Bible is clear that in this life we will have trouble (John 16:33). But that is not the end of the scripture verse or the story that God is weaving into your life. Which part of John 16:33 will you choose to focus on knowing that our battles are not of the physical world, but of heavenly realms (Eph 6)?

“I have told you these things, so that IN ME you may have PEACE. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

If you keep your focus on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith, then you will find peace.

Choose this day to look for the proof of God’s promises in your life. Approach Him with expectation knowing that He keeps His promises. And do not be discourage if He has to undo some stuff in your life that is not serving His purposes for you. That undoing can sometimes be painful, but trust His process. Ask God to help you focus on His mighty hand working in your life and to help you see the proof of it. You can do ALL THINGS through CHRIST who STRENGTHENS you. If you need help, reach out to someone safe who can help you see where God is at work because He IS at work in your life.
